What is Drawing/Writing?

What is Drawing/Writing?

Drawing/Writing is a series of five interconnected drawing and writing exercises which start with concrete description and move to abstract analyses through a range of exercises based on simile, metaphor, analogy, speculation, prediction, and hypothesis. Peer sharing builds cooperative verbal skills. Group critiques reinforce verbal skills. By working with a Fifth Step called the Composite Abstraction, students explore recombinant, inventive drawing using two approaches: Acceptable Differences and Right Relationships. Practice with abstract drawing encourages discussions about the possibility of aesthetic- or arts-based criteria for ethical/moral decision-making. The work with abstract drawing also opens students’ minds to the idea of multiple representations. The more ways a student has to represent and communicate information, the more effective that student’s mind will be. hand logo
